I’m Irina Georgescu, a UK-based food writer and author originally from Romania, and a proud James Beard Award winner. My writing, books and recipes celebrate Romanian cuisine, a cultural aspect that remains largely unexplored by the rest of the world. Through my work and culinary tours, I aim to change this perception.

Cookery books

My first book, ‘Carpathia, Food from the Heart of Romania’ was shortlisted by the UK Guild of Food Writers for the Best International Cookbook Award. At the same time, the German Culinary Academy awarded its German translation a Silver Feather. The book was also translated into Hungarian and Dutch.

My second book, ‘Tava, Eastern European Baking and Desserts from Romania and Beyond’ is a meticulously researched baking book celebrating centuries of diversity and overlapping cultures that form today’s cuisine in Romania. I share the story of those dishes that have come to represent the identity of different cultural communities across the country. There is also a German translation.

My third book, ‘Danube, Recipes from Eastern Europe’ is a culinary journey with easy-to-make recipes from the enchanting Eastern lands of the Danube River. With over 80 extraordinary recipes for everyday cooking – many focusing on vegetables, beans and pulses without meat – this cookbook is a testament to the diverse cultures of Romania, Serbia and Bulgaria in those border regions shaped by the Danube.
